Havenly Head Designer Shelby Girard is decorating her new home in her favorite style: Black and white glam! In part 1, discover black and white home inspiration as Shelby walks us through how she narrowed her vision for her new home.
As first time home-buyers, my husband and I were thrilled to find our 1889 home with original details still in tact. We loved the simple brick facade, high ceilings, big windows and original trim. While we made a few cosmetic fixes to update flooring, finishes and layout, I started looking for design inspiration.
While I design homes for Havenly clients all the time, and have the privilege of exploring different sides of my personal style through those designs, deciding on one design direction for my own space proved to be quite the challenge! I’ve gone through personal style evolutions where I’ve explored everything from colorful and beachy boho to contemporary glam. Throughout these style phases, I’ve recognized I tend to go back to a few key design elements: neutrals, a mix of old and new and a little bit of weird.
Having learned this about myself, I decided to design my new home in, what I believe to be, the truest reflection of my style. I’ve coined this style “Parisian Modern” – a chic contrast of the minimal, the ornate and the edgy. I’ve also committed to sticking to neutrals: mainly tones of black, white, and gold. Here are some of the looks I pinned as I gathered my black and white home inspiration.
Black And White Home Inspiration
I am always a sucker for ornate moldings and antique gilded mirrors! I am also drawn to the color palette of this space and how the simple lines of the furniture contrast with the bones of the room.
I love long arm sconces and the simplicity of this vignette. The clean lines keep it minimal but sculptural, adding instant interest to the space.
I love the use of black and white paired with antique brass in this kitchen. The contrast adds an element of elegance.
I love the mix of mediums and framing in this gallery wall. Black and white prints and bold designs will definitely be a factor in my home, whether it’s modern abstract or portrait photography.
Mixed materials can help neutral spaces stay interesting. The texture and statement lighting in this dining room have me drooling.
I love adding interest with bold pops of pattern. The graphic black and white tile in this bathroom is definitely something I’d love to try.
After gathering inspiration, I put together a moodboard for myself. A moodboard is a great starting point to create a cohesive direction for a space, which why we’ve made this an integral part of the Havenly design process! I refer to this board as I make design decisions throughout the home in order to make sure my vision is cohesive and stays true to my instincts.
Stay tuned to see how this vision plays out and discover more black and white home inspiration! In the next post, I’ll walk you through my design ideas for the major rooms in my house.
