Decorating for the holidays doesn’t have to mean busting out the santa statues and Department 56 villages. At Havenly, we prefer to take a less literal approach that can span the season and nods to the holidays while still being design-forward and unique.

Designing For The Holidays: Start With What You Have

We approach holiday decorating practically by starting with what we have, and mixing in new accents that are seasonal but versatile at the same time. No need to replace every accent in your home with a red and green version of itself. Your holiday style should take a queue from the things you naturally gravitate towards. For example, if you have a beachy boho style with spring-like colors and patterns, try a modern take on holiday decor with a white tree and pastel ornaments. If you’re more glam and love dramatic pieces, try sticking to all metallic decor for the holidays. If you’re more traditional, tartan and classic wreaths will fit easily into your home.

In this contemporary room, we used a unique mix of pattern, color and material to invoke the holiday season without screaming “It’s Christmas!” We replaced a neutral jute rug with a modern plaid, switched out the pillows and throw for ones with deep jewel tones, added faux fur stools and added artwork that feels more seasonal, and spruced up the mantel with a garland that can be used all through the fall and winter, gold penguins and berry branches.

Most of these pieces save perhaps the penguins and garland are versatile enough to use throughout your home all year round, which is a special bonus if you live in a small space and don’t have storage space for boxes of holiday decor.
