When you first start decorating your space, it’s important to set aside some extra time to put together a spending plan. Here are a few pointers to help you get started!

1. Determine Needs vs. Wants

Begin with the first room that you wish to work on. Write down any pre-existing furniture you own. Now, write down any wants you may have for that furniture (or ideas for new pieces). For example, you may know you want to upgrade your sofa to a sectional that seats six and is easy to maintain. If quality is important to you, write that down as well.

2. Know Your Priorities

Figure out what needs to happen ASAP vs. what can wait until you decide to revamp your space again. A Simple Tip: Place the room you spend the most time in at the top of your priority list. Think: Is there something that would make the space more comfortable? Is there something you would like to have when entertaining?

3. Write Expectations Down

An easy way to do this: Look at all of the wants & needs listed. Place a dollar amount next to each item. When you total the amounts, this will give you a ballpark figure to what you are hoping to spend. Making this preliminary budget helps you know when and where to make compromises when you actually begin the design process.

4. Understand What Works for You

If you’re currently renting and not looking for long-term items, quality may not be as high of a priority than if you were in a different stage of life. Know what you are interested in. Are you looking for long-term pieces over trendy fads? Are you looking to gain pieces that will last for 5 years? 10 years? Are you looking for kid-friendly pieces that you will replace in a few years? This will affect your budget. Give yourself leeway here.

5. Leave Room for the Unexpected

Perhaps you know that you need a new headboard for your bed, but fall in love with new art pieces. Give yourself space for these unexpected desires. Have an understanding of what you currently have vs. what will enhance your space to make it a more delightful place to dwell.

Finally: Reward Yourself

Although it might take a little time, it’s really rewarding to develop and understand your budget. You will have confidence knowing that you went into the design process with a well-defined spending plan that articulates what you’re hoping to achieve when the design process is complete.
